In the May issue of Adelante, I discussed the immigration reform bill that was being discussed all across the country. During that time, we witnessed massive street protests in support of the bill as well as hearing some very passionate arguments against the bill.

Well, as you may know already, the bill, though modified from its original format, did pass the Senate. It is now in the Conference Committee to have it reconciled with the very harsh and bad immigration bill that passed the House of Representatives earlier this year.

There are couple of important issues here.

First and foremost, if an immigration reform bill emerges from the Conference Committee, it should be more like the Senate version than the House version. In order to put pressure on the Committee members to make the right choices, please make sure you contact your representatives and and express you views. To help you in this process, the American Immigration Lawyers Association has put out a draft letter to thank members of the Senate that helped pass the Senate bill. A copy of this letter is provided here for your use. Please send a personalized version of this letter to your Senators today.

Secondly, it is important for the community to understand that we do not yet have an immigration reform law. The bill currently pending in Congress will not become law until the President signs it. I say this because every day I get calls from anxious folks that are ready to fork over large sums of money in order to be first in line for the “amnesty” that may never come. And unfortunately for them, there are unscrupoulous notarios and attorneys who gladly take their money.

It is an act of fraud for someone to take money and sign people up for an “amnesty.” So, please be careful when people promise you work visas or anything resembling an amnesty and ask you for money in return.

The US Immigration agency (USCIS) has posted a warning regarding this potential for fraud. You may read the warning by visiting http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/statements/FraudWarning_040706PN.pdf.
