Miss Bienestar will
make HERstory again this year on Monday October 9th. As part of
BIENESTAR's Transgeneros Unidas (TU) program, BIENESTAR will present a
night of beauty, entertainment and health education. The
drop-dead-gorgeous transgender women are gearing up to motivate the LGBT
community at large towards a life of beauty and health.
The theme for this year's Miss Bienestar is "Our Dreams Come True. The
dreams of the transgender community are BIENESTAR's focus all year round.
TU leaders understand that the dreams of the transgender community are
often cut short by the high levels of discrimination, transphobia and HIV
infection. "Miss Bienestar is our way of reminding each other and our
broader community that we are beautiful empowered women who will fight to
ensure that our bodies are healthy and that our voices are heard," said
Bamby Salcedo, Program Manager for Transgeneros Unidas.
BIENESTAR's transgender program continues to be the primary resource in
Southern California for the Latina transgender community. By outreaching
in places where the local community gathers, such as local health fairs,
street corners, prides and night clubs, leaders from TU make certain that
the local transgender community knows that there is a safe place where
they are welcomed and valued.
HIV prevention through education and self-empowerment are the focus of the
support groups, counseling and workshop sessions offered by TU. This focus
is certainly carried throughout their efforts, and Miss Bienestar is no
exception. The beauty pageant, aside from the traditional nightgown and
bathing suit segments, also has an interview segment where the
participants are asked to give their point of view on HIV prevention.
Like years before, Miss Bienestar 2006 guarantees to be an unforgettable
and inspirational night for all. Miss Bienestar 2006 will take place on
October 9th, at the Arena Night Club @ 6655 Santa Monica Blvd. at 7pm. For
more information on TU or Miss Bienestar, please contact: Bamby Salcedo at
