Para esos fanáticos de telenovelas, Tierra de Pasiones por Telemundo el año pasado fue una de las novelas más importantes para nuestra comunidad gay latina. El personaje de Alex Domínguez, un gay joven, fue uno de los que tenía a los gays pegados a la televisión de lunes a viernes. Y el actor que le dio vida a ese personaje es un hombre mexicano pero muy macho, su nombre es Carlos East. Y si reconocen el nombre es porque su padre Carlos East Sr. fue actor de Hollywood y tuvo parte en el clásico Around the World in 80 Days. Pero este joven tiene ya también su trayectoria como actor desde bebé. Originario de México, este bello hombre de ojos verdes tiene un gemelo. Imagínense! Although he calls Miami home he plans on making his mark in Hollywood and promises we will see him in English speaking projects in the near future. He's a straight man who isn't afraid to play gay and has already won a GLAAD award for his work on Tierra de Pasiones, thanks in part to a very sensual gay kiss, so as far as the gays are concerned he's already got our attention. It was at the very Miami GLAAD Awards that I met Carlos and he agreed to give me an exclusive interview for his gay loyal fans. Y ahora desde Miami un mexicano muy sexy para sus fans de California, Carlos East.

Samara: ¿En dónde vives?
Carlos: En Miami, Coral Gables.

Samara: Where are your favorite hang outs in Miami?
Carlos: Well I like Venetian pool, I like the Biltmore. Esos son mis favoritos. En verano Venetian pool y todo el año el Biltmore.

Samara: Where did you grow up and tell us about it?
Carlos: Yo crecí en México, la ciudad de México, pero cuando era mas chiquito nosotros viviamos in a place that is close to Cancún in the state of Quintana Roo. And my parents had un rancho de plantas odumuntarias, for hotels. So we lived in this ranch which was in the middle of the jungle actually because in that part of México theres a lot of jungle and very dense vegetation and there's a lot of wild animals over there like wild boars and snakes and all kinds of stuff. I remember it. I was very young but I kind of remember being in the dense vegetation with my brother and it was really nice. And then afterwards we moved to Mexico City and that's where I lived most of my life.

Samara: Tienes un twin brother?
Carlos: Sí, somos gemelos idénticos.

Samara: Y dinos hacerca de tu papá famoso.
Carlos: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He used to be an actor since the 60's. Y él tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar con personajes como Lana Turner, Karl Malden, Boris Karloff so he had a career in Mexico pero también incursionó un poquito en Hollywood. Pero como nacimos mi hermano y yo pues se tuvo que dedicar a trabajar en México solamente.

Samara: Did you meet a lot of famous people when you were growing up?
Carlos: Desde que era chiquitico era una casa donde siempre era el punto de reunión de todo los amigos de productores, directores, cantantes.  So it was a constant party you know. Una fiesta en la casa de mis papás duraba the whole weekend porque había cantantes, entonces de repente llegaban y tocaban la guitarra y de repente llegaba otro cantante y entonces se armaba ahí la fiesta, me entiendes? So, yeah I used to know a lot of famous people. But you know when I was a kid I didn't know they were famous I just knew they were cool and they were my parents friends.

Samara: ¿Cuanto tiempo tienes actuando?
Carlos: Lo primero que yo hice fue una película donde mi hermano y yo todavía estábamos babies y salimos en brazos de uno de los personajes supuestamente haciendo de sus hijos recién nacidos. So you can imagine since I'm a baby. Y concientemente cuando teniamos como seis años, siete años. Y de hecho hicimos bastantes películas. Hicimos como unas like ten movies. Desde que eramos chiquitos hasta mas o menos cuando teniamos doce años.

Samara: Tell us about your other job/hobby de arte?
Carlos: Ah bueno eso es algo que mi papá gracias a su visión artística nos inculcó desde muy chiquitos y también a mi mamá que era algo muy chistoso porque cuando nos levantábamos en la mañana cuando ibamos al kinder it was very difficult to make us wake up you know. So they came up with this gimmick that in the morning they will tell us, “hey kids lets go play with plastilina, with clay, and with crayons.” Nos engañaban para levantarnos y entonces enpezábamos a dibujar y entonces desde muy temprana edad nació esto. Y mis papás además de amigos actores tenían amigos pintores. Todo tipo de artes. Entonces desde chiquitos empezamos a hacer esto. Y eso surgió con el tiempo hasta que ahora de repente you know when I'm not doing a telenovela or a movie what I do is do designs for different brands like Nike, etc, etc.

Samara: Cuando hiciste el casting para Tierra de Pasiones ¿sabías que el personaje era gay?
Carlos: Cuando me dijeron que había la oportunidad de esta telenovela no, yo no sabía. A mi me dijeron, “hay un personaje y quieren verte para ese personaje.” Entonces cuando fui a hacer el casting me dijeron “este personaje es tal y cual” y me dieron la psicología del personaje y fue cuando me dijeron que era un personaje que era gay. Pero honestamente a mi no me importó porque como actor I have to take the risk you know. I don't mind si a mi me ofrecen un personaje de serial killer o de Ghandi. Como actor uno tiene que tomar el riesgo y hacer algo diferente, no? Como te digo te tienes que harriesgar. Y entonces hice el casting y les gustó el casting que hice y bueno, me quedé en la telenovela.
Y entonces lo que yo empecé a hacer fue my research as an actor you have to osea ver lo que este personaje tiene. Ver lo que este personaje está sufriendo, no? Entonces en mi caso yo hice mucho research con amigos que tengo que son gays, yo les preguntaba, “oyes, cuando tú saliste del closet cómo fue el proceso con tu familia.” Y también estuve llendo a pláticas de un grupo que se llama PFLAG, es un grupo que se hace donde van las familias de los chicos que están en coming out of the closet process. A mi eso me sirvió mucho para ver como es en la vida real porque muchas veces en la televisión these characters are portrayed as a comic relief you know, which is not bad cause it's funny pero también a este personaje yo quise darle como una cara más real, no? Lo que realmente está pasando. Cómo es la sociedad en la que estamos viviendo, el proceso tan difícil para un chavo que es gay salir del closet ante su familia y ante la sociedad, no? Y entonces yo hice mi research, estuve ahí participando con este grupo y bueno crié mi personaje y por suerte este personaje según el feedback de la gente que yo me encontraba en la calle, porque no importa que te digan que la telenovela va muy bien o muy mal en las revistas osea tú eso lo ves when you go on the street and people stop by and tell you, “hey your character is awesome.” Y a mi lo que me pasóo mucho es que la gente en vez de preguntarme, “hey are you really gay?” They would tell me that they would suffer with the character. Que por qué me dejaba que me trataran tan mal. Y te estoy diciendo que gente like old couples que cambiaron su punto de vista al fin y al cabo esto era una historia de amor. Regardless if it was a man and a man, una niña y una niña. Osea the thing is it's two souls that fall in love and this is the story about those two souls. So that's what people got, they understood that it doesn't matter if you're in love with a person of the same sex at the end it's a love story and el sufrimiento que tiene cualquier ser humano, las alegrías que tiene cualquier ser humano. Entonces para mi eso me dio mucho gusto porque todo el trabajo y todo el esfuerzo que se hizo para que este personaje quedara tan complejo funcionó, porque al fin y al cabo la gente reaccionó de una manera positiva. Y yo creo que aunque sea un poquito les pude cambiar el punto de vista acerca de la comunidad gay, no?

Samara: Dinos hacerca del beso gay en la telenovela.
Carlos: Esta novela fue la primera vez que dos personajes del mismo sexo se besaban y es la primera vez en la televisión latina que pasa eso. Entonces it was a breakthrough you know. It was something really important for the Latin television. And for me it was kind of difficult because son escenas que tienes que… igual cuando me ha tocado besar a mujeres es una escena que tienes que estar atento, osea there's too much going around, the sound, the camera, las emociones. It was nice because todo el mundo guardó respeto ante la escena y actually it was really quick. And at the end it was kind of a little fake you know. Porque en fin no nos dimos el beso porque it wasn't gonna come out on TV like the actual mouth to mouth action. Pero, regardless, si a mi me hubieran dicho, “esto tiene que salir en la escena, en la televisión asi” a mi no me hubiera importado porque that's the character and what I'm doing is I'm lending my body to that soul in order to give life to that character. Osea si hubiera tenido que ser asi, a mi no me hubiera importado en absoluto. Pero no importando que fuera treuqueado y todo eso we were like really close you know. Osea la intensidad de la escena ahi estaba aunque no fuera contacto físico, you know.

Samara: ¿Cuál fue la reacción de tus seres queridos hacerca de tu papel gay?
Carlos: Pues fíjate que… como ellos saben que yo soy un actor. Osea como yo les puedo decir, “hey, now I'm doing a character that is gay.” The next time I'm going to tell them, “hey, I'm doing a serial killer.” Osea siempre aceptan con mucho respeto los papeles que yo hago. Y les dio gusto que hiciera un papel tan… so real. Como que tan importante para este proceso para que los latinos como que abran un poquito su corazón y su point of view, you know. Osea hay dos caras de la moneda, you know. And this personaje ayudó para que la comunidad latina viera la cara más real, no? No, no, no, there's feelings, there's human beings.

Samara: ¿Cómo es la actuación de telenovela comparado a otros proyectos de actuación?
Carlos: Bueno la actuación de la telenovela… it's fun, pero sometimes es muy cansado. It has to be a little bit more over the top because when you're doing a movie y levantas una ceja o haces un movimiento muy grande you know it's your face one hundred times bigger on the screen you know. So you can see everything. So en la telenovela tú tienes que hacer un poquito más porque la televisión es mas chiquita, entonces la gente tiene que ver un poquito más estas expresiones y todo eso. Es divertido. Es muy cansado porque son muchas horas. Muchas repeticiones. Como te digo son muchos actores, las cámaras, las luces, la gente de audio, de extras. So es un trabajo en equipo que se tiene que coreografiar muy bien para que salga bien. Pero es muy divertido.

Samara: By the way congratulations on the Tierra de Pasiones win at the GLAAD Awards.
Carlos: Oh, thank you very much, thank you, thank you!

Samara: Did you have fun at the party?
Carlos: Yeah, yeah, yeah, actually I had fun! The food was awesome, the company was perfect, it was a really nice event. I had a lot of fun.

Samara: Now, you have a girlfriend. How do you do it with so many hot actresses around you?
Carlos: You have to stay focused you know. Todos mis amigos me dicen, “hey, how do you do it?” You know when you're in love you see these other beautiful girls as your compañeras de trabajo, you know. Your working buddies. You don't even see them like the hot chicks, you know. They're just like your working partners and that's it. So you have to stay focused. I'm not saying that everybody is like that. There might be somebody that is como un pica flor, de flor en flor. So, you have to be focused. Y no es una carrera que tanto para los hombres como para las mujeres, you know you have to be atento a lo que estás haciendo porque es muy fácil que la gente empiece a frivolizar, ir a las fiestas, and you know. Hay que mantener las relaciones de trabajo de una manera sana porque imagínate if you start dating somebody in the cast and then you get in a fight with them, and then you have to work with them it's going to be very difficult. Osea mantener una sana relación de trabajo.

Samara: Now for some sexy questions if you don't mind?
Carlos: Ok, ok, go for it. (laughs)

Samara: Does Carlos East prefer briefs or boxers?
Carlos: Ah, you know what, I used to use boxers but I just discovered briefs. And I kind of like them.

Samara: How about sex? Lights on or off?
Carlos: Ahh… dim. In the middle. I want to see something but imagination is a powerful erogeno.

Samara: So, I hear you're going Hollywood now?
Carlos: Well, my biggest dream, and I'm going to make it happen, is ah I wanna be in Hollywood con people like Salma Hayek and all these great Latinos that are doing such a great job opening the doors for the other latinos que estamos like dreaming about Hollywood, you know. It's happening with Ugly Betty. With all these wonderful people that are doing such a great job. So, that's my dream. You're gonna see me next year probably in one of the hottest series in the American market. That's for sure.

Samara: We'll definitely be supporting you.
Carlos: That's awesome!

Samara: ¿Qué nuevos proyectos hay para ti?
Carlos: Bueno ahorita están en puerta varias oportunidades de trabajo tanto en la tele como en el arte. Pero right now I'm in the process of choosing, going to call backs, going to castings. Osea como que estoy… as an actor you always have to be on the move, you know. If you have un proyecto en la puerta you cannot put all your energy towards that certain part. You have to maintain tus posibilidades amplias, you know. So, by the time you get to choose something you have diferentes propuestas you can negotiate because being an actor is not just doing the art, it's being a business person. It's a difficult career because you have to mezclar las cuestiones artísticas y también tienes que ser un hombre de negocios porque tienes que saber negociar y saber pedir por lo que vales.

Samara: ¿Algún mensaje para tus fieles fans gays?
Carlos: I want to thank them a lot for the GLAAD Award because that's something very important you know. You know I want to thank them porque yo tengo bastantes buenos amigos que son gays and they're so loyal, they're so fun, outgoing. I want to thank them to be supportive and I want to tell them when I come out in Hollywood I want to see them there… (laughs) supporting me.

Samara: Muchísimas gracias por el tiempo que me diste Carlos.
Carlos: No, no, no gracias a ti y cualquier cosa ya sabes, tú tienes mi teléfono. Cualquier event or something that you need support as well from my side you know that I'm there. Besitos, bye.
